To Err, After All, Is Human...

"Be not ashamed of mistakes and thus make them crimes."
                 -Confucius
                                   Thinker, political figure, educator
                                                      (551-479 BCE)

"We don't make mistakes, we make happy accidents."
                -Bob Ross
PBS American Artist and TV Presenter
                                                      (1942-1995)

I'm starting this entry with two similar quotes that have stood the test of time. Confucius' prophetic words urging us to accept our mistakes as learning lessons free from shame as opposed to blowing them out of proportion with detrimental consequences echos through to modern day as a gentle reminder to embrace our accidents with a positive attitude, according to the late, beloved, bushy-haired painter, Bob Ross.

Mistakes are unavoidable in life. In fact, we'd hardly be human without them. Sometimes it's those very flaws that deepen our character and round out our individual personalities. Some can manage to wade through large portions of life without making significant ones. Others make monumental oops' seemingly daily.

They key is to go about your life to the best of your ability. There will be pitfalls. Wrong turns will be unwittingly taken. And more often than not, the harder you try to avoid making a mistake, the greater the chances are you are headed to Mistake City. Unfortunately, Murphy's Law is alive and well.

But sometimes amazing things can happen in the midst of perceived "mistakes".

Some of the greatest inventions have been created while the inventor was trying to concoct something that was supposed to have a different outcome. The goal he hoped to achieve, the one he'd set out to discover, begins to pale in the face of the unexpected revelation. Eureka! He might not have even begun to consider what now exists before him had it not been for that "happy accident".

It is important to be open to accepting mistakes and not rail against them, labeling them failures, doomed to humiliation. Here the important, wise saying takes precedence, "If at first you don't succeed, try, try again!" In making mistakes we evolve into the person we eventually feel proud of. A silly example includes fashion choices over the years. Most people can sort through old photos and wince with not-so suppressed laughter at the cringe-worthy attire we once thought was "in". How is it we went around looking like that? And what was with that hair??? As crazy as we now think we looked, those mishaps are what added spice to life back then and fond memories to kid about today.

So the next time you find yourself knee deep in a mistake, remember this...

As long as you pull out of it unscathed, you'll be all the richer for the experience and that much closer to a well-rounded you!
